I left ESP on since I had never driven any W203 fast before and I didn't need surprises. I launched in sport mode with the transmission set to "2" so it would not shift higher than second gear. The test track started as one long straight run with a sharp 90 degree turn followed with a bunch of closely spaced turns on different surfaces to keep the final speeds down. Because the ride height was also raised slightly over the 05 the actual turn in response is a little more direct on the older 05 while the ultimate cornering limits are a little too high on both versions for me to make any valid remarks since I haven't had a chance yet to track an 06 or newer model.īack in 05 when the facelift W203's were new I had a chance to play with a C230k at a Mercedes sponsored driving event. With the plugs in place, refasten the coil packs with their Torx fittings, and re-install the engine cover.Click to expand. The spring rates were softened a bit after the 05 because most buyers thought the C230 should have been an entry level Benz rather than a Benz set to run with the entry level BMW 3 series and complained the ride was too harsh. If you do not have a torque wrench, tighten the plug a little less than a quarter of a turn or until snug. Do not over tighten the spark plugs! You can snap a plug off in the cylinder, and extracting a broken plug can be a terrifying experience. Once it becomes tight, set your torque wrench to 15 ft/lbs and tighten. You can use a small amount of anti-seize on the threads of the plug if you'd like.īegin tightening the plug by hand first with only the socket and extension. If you bought plugs designed for your make and model, they should come pre-gapped. Step 4 – Install in the reverse order of removal If you're not using magnetic sockets, it is a good idea to replicate this. This is to make sure that it doesn't come free when trying to remove the spark plug from the hole. Note, in the image above, the socket is duct taped to the the ratchet's extension. Inserting a spark plug socket into the tube. Seat the rubber of the spark plug socket on the plug securely. Using your ratchet connected to the three or six inch extension, remove the spark plugs one by one. The red circles indicate the T30 torx bolts on the coil packs. There is a rubber seal on the coil packs, so you might feel or hear a soft "suction-like" popping sound as they are released. Be careful not to pull too hard or the connector/wiring can be damaged. Then, pull up on the coil pack until it pops off. Remove the two T30 Torx bolts holding each coil pack onto the engine. The four grommets holding the rear engine cover in place. Remove the intake hoses by pulling them away from the engine cover. The four grommets holding the front cover in place. You will feel the cover pop off the rubber mounts below it. Remove the rear by pulling up at all four corners of the cover.Remove the two air intake hoses attached to the rear cover by pulling them off.Slide the front section away from the rear, and lift it off the rubber mounts below it (larger section). The engine cover comes off in two pieces. Torque wrench (but this job can be completed without one).
